Swiss Newsletter: Castles to knock your socks off

Weekends go to fast Reader

We took our godson to our local castle ruin on the weekend. He is so into battles, swords, crossbows and the like that he could not get enough of it.

Switzerland is full of stunning castles, and many of them are close to places like Zurich, Interlaken, Gruyeres and Montreux!

So, if you have the time and can drag yourself away from the stunning mountain views, I highly recommend it.

I will highlight them below and some other handy tips to start your week.

CASTLES IN SWITZERLAND

These historical castles are jaw-dropping in size, location of design.

IS ZURICH EXPENSIVE?

The question everyone asks!

And much of the information applies to the whole of Switzerland.

THE CHEESY TOWN OF GRUYERES

Perched high on a hilltop overlooking the western Alps, Gruyeres is a well-preserved fortress town, and so much more!

It comes complete with its own castle, walls, cobbled streets and is home to the wacky Giger Museum (creator of the original Alien from the film). He also made an Alien-themed bar right next door. Grab a seat in an "alien" chair, it's a must!

It is also where fantastic cheese comes from. (And no, not the Gruyeres you buy in the USA; this is way better!).

Nearby is the Maison Cailler, a strong competitor to Lindt, so you can also combine a visit with a chocolate tour and still be home in time for dinner.

FACT OF THE DAY

SWISS RAILWAYS

Switzerland has about 5,132 km (3,188 miles) of railway tracks, one of the highest railway densities in the world.

So, if you are not sure if you should drive or catch the train, the above fact might sway you. If not, read the article below.

BOAT RIDES

Take a cruise anywhere

Switzerland is full of lakes. And some of them are as large as sees!

From Lake Lucerne and Lake Zurich to Lake Geneva and the lakes around Interlaken, you almost have no excuse not to get out on the water!

Here are some of your many options

IMAGE OF THE DAY (Submit yours)

The First Cliff Walk is one of the highlights of Grindelwald.

Catch the gondola from the center of town, and after a hike to Bachalpsee, you can end the day with a breathtaking walk on the suspended First Cliff Walk.

Stunning views are guaranteed, but not for the faint of heart!

18 May 2024 Of course you have tried Toblerone chocolate! But did you know that the mountain on it used to be the Matterhorn Reader? Long story short, the Swiss government was not happy with a non-Swiss manufacturer (made by Mondelez outside Switzerland) using Swiss "logos" like the country's most famous mountain! So now the mountain on the box is an imitation of the Matterhorn! Nonetheless, the Matterhorn is a sight to behold. It is almost the perfect pyramid mountain that we all drew when...
