Swiss Newsletter: My personal tour of Zurich

Hope your week is going well Reader

When I first came to Switzerland back in 2001, I lived in a very old apartment down by the river in Baden.

Like many of you, I come from a country that was founded only a few hundred years ago. But my apartment building was over 500 years old.

And I just saw an apartment for rent today in the Weinmarkt Square in the heart of Lucerne. The location is mind-blowing (Ann almost had to pick me up off the floor).

That is Switzerland for you. You can find history almost everywhere.

In the middle of Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Geneva and even across the river from Interlaken in Unterseen.

So, be sure to immerse yourself in at least one of these places while you are here. Sure, the mountains will knock your socks off, but the old towns are just as impressive!

My OLD TOWN TOUR OF ZURICH

This is the route I tell everyone I knwo to do in Zurich.

So, I made a post about it, complete with map. Consider it my gift to you!

And, if you want actual guided tours, try these ones

GRINDELWALD GORGE

If you are in the Interlaken area and it's either a very hot day (like we had last July) or it's raining, then the gorge below Grindelwald makes for a fun day out.

There's a suspended spider's web you can trampoline. AND You can even throw yourself off the cliff too.

Or if you prefer geology, there's lots of stuff to learn along the way, and a crystal collection you can check out at the entrance.

FACT OF THE DAY

SWISS LOVE CHOCOLATE

If you think you love chocolate, then think again.

The Swiss are among the biggest consumers of their tasty chocolate in the world. They eat around 10kg (22 lbs) a year, which is about half a pound a week.

And with so much delicious chocolate even in the supermarket, who can blame them! (or me :>)

MONTREUX

Home to Freddie Mercury

Not only is Switzerland full of history, there are some world-class museums and statues to famous people all over the country.

Freddie Mercury spent his last years in Montreux. And Charlie Chaplin spent 25 years here.

You should head on down to the Riviera of Switzerland to find out why!

IMAGE OF THE DAY (Submit yours)

Above Grindelwald sits the serene Bachalpsee (shown below).

If you get there early enough, the lake is absolutely still and reflects the Eiger in the distance (with the Jungfraujoch behind it).

To get here is a relatively easy 2 hour return hike from the top of Grindelwald First. It makes for an awesome day out with the Cliff Walk at the top and perhaps a ride on the adrenaline pumping First Flyter!

5 May 2024 Sometimes I feel like I am scaring people Reader When I have my travel consultation calls with my clients, I always warn them to be prepared for the weather. That does not mean you can do anything on a rainy day. Instead you have to be just avoid heading up into the mountains and maybe do a city trip...
