Switzerlanding Weekend Newsletter (Car or Train?)

14 April 2023

Hey Reader

I had to go an visit another two apartments on the other side of Zurich yesterday.

And the big debate between me and Ann was - should we drive, or catch the train?

And I notice this is a common theme in my Facebook group too.

So I thought I would share some quick thoughts:

  • If you are not a big group, the cost of hiring a car in Switzerland (and parking and petrol/gas) is high
  • trains are the best way to get around without the hassle (one of the best train systems in the world)

The final choice is of course more complicated than that, but for 90% of you, a car makes no sense. You can read my post cars vs a swiss travel pass here.

In fact, Ann and I did not have a car for our first 12 years here (and we travel regularly in Switzerland). So that tells you a lot.

Mountain Excursion

JUNGFRAUJOCH

It's on everyone's list for a reason:

  • the highest train station in Europe
  • epic views of the longest glacier
  • stunning scenery along the way

Want to learn more about it? Or wondering if you should visit the Schilthorn instead?

SWISS Towns

Some Of The Best

You probably know some of the more famous towns in Switzerland, but there are many more you should consider on your trip here.

SWISS FACT OF THE DAY

Switzerland has four official languages! Kinda crazy right? With borders to Germany, France and Italy, it is no surprise that German, French and Italian are spoken here. The fourth is an obscure Roman language from hundreds of years ago (called Romansch)!

What about English?

Find out all about the amount of English spoken in the post below...

MUSEUM OF THE DAY

Swiss Transport Museum

If you are traveling with kids or have a rainy day in Lucerne, then the Swiss Transport Museum is going to blow your mind. Full of hundreds of original planes, boats, trains, cars and more. It is part of my insanely in-depth Lucerne Guide, but you can also read about it in detail below.

SWISS IMAGE OF THE DAY (Submit yours)

The ridge walk along to Fronalpstock above Stoos is one of the most stunning in the Lucerne area, Not only is the hike amazing, but the brand-new funicular to the Stoos, part way up, is the steepest in the world.

I re-walked this hike last September and it reminded me how jaw-dropping it truely is. It is not for the unfit, but is doable for more people. You can see my post on it here.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Wonderful Lucerne!

5 May 2024 Sometimes I feel like I am scaring people Reader When I have my travel consultation calls with my clients, I always warn them to be prepared for the weather. That does not mean you can do anything on a rainy day. Instead you have to be just avoid heading up into the mountains and maybe do a city trip...
